EMART Energy returns to Amsterdam as industry looks at managing the European energy transition

“Industry to discuss biggest shake-up since the start of gas-on-gas competition”

Europe’s foremost energy trading experts are meeting in Amsterdam in November for the annual EMART Energy conference and expo to discuss the challenges facing the industry such as the eurozone crisis, stricter EU trading rules, security of supply and the impact of renewables.  More than 850 energy trading professionals will be at the 14th edition of EMART Energy from 21-22 November, at what is regarded as Europe’s largest and leading industry platform.

Managing the energy transition

Says EMART Energy’s event director Nel Jonk: “the 2020 renewable energy consumption targets set at EU level are having profound consequences especially for the electricity generation and supply industries. Although the trading of instruments evidencing renewable attributes is not widespread in Europe, it is crucial that traders understand the treatment of power output from renewable sources in the network and in the market.”

Electricity market design
The Amsterdam forum will also look at how energy traders will have to adapt their businesses to cope with new producers or with processes “translated” from other EU regions says Nel Jonk.  “The European Commission, ACER and ENTSO-E are continuing their efforts to put in place a uniform model for operation of the European wholesale market in electricity. This model is meant to cover all timeframes of the market, from forward through day-ahead to intraday and balancing. The target date for implementation is 2014.”

Biggest shake-up since start of gas-on-gas competition
According to Nel Jonk the European gas market is now rapidly developing new rules, following the ‘target model’ published by the European Regulators. She continues: “in parallel with this there have been extreme commercial pressures between oil-index gas pricing and gas prices at traded hubs. Our EMART Energy trader’s panel will share their perspectives of gas market design and preparation for the biggest shake-up since the start of gas-on-gas competition.”
